Q: Lee, could you start by telling us more about the product Enigma Digital is building?

Lee: Enigma Digital’s goal is to maintain a range of products that recover deleted data from smart devices.

Q: How critical is the level of software engineering expertise for a company’s ability to compete on the global scale?

Lee: Expertise must be at the highest level as it decides whether you succeed or fail. When there’s a lack of technical abilities in your team and you decide to downturn the scope of your product, it could very well lead to failure. In software development, you have to build both fast and smart if you intend to stay competitive. Generally, it’s all about time, speed, quality, and money.

Q: As a UK-based company, have you experienced any difficulties finding software engineering talent?

Lee: Yes, big time. All the software engineer superstars in this country are hired by big companies. Also, many software developers live and work in London, and we’re in Birmingham. All this means that our method of recruitment has had to be quite different.

Q: Could you provide a 3-item list of the best tactics that help Enigma Digital find the best software engineers?

Lee:

  • Freelance websites like Upwork, which help identify the most talented candidates;
  • Recruitment agencies;
  • Being an innovative company with extraordinary product.

In software development, you have to build both fast and smart if you intend to stay competitive.

Q: What do you think candidates are looking for in an employer these days?

Lee: Here are the main things our software developers value:

Challenging tasks – the chance to build recovery algorithms from scratch and improve them to match big corporate competitors.

Company personality – clever, helpful, daring, passionate.

Company valuesfresh thinking: the first with new solutions; determination: never give up; empathy: we’re on our customers' site.

Benefits – real control of your mobile data security; the opportunity to mentor those around you who may not be quite at the same advanced level; you join a talented software engineering team.

Q: How do you conduct interviews at Enigma Digital? What kind of information should a company present to a candidate during the interview to make them interested in the offer?

Lee: We provide them with information about the journey of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going. Basically, our past, present and future. At Enigma Digital, we share options with each of our employees, making them feel like part of the team and inspiring them to help us reach our goal, which inevitably becomes their goal.

Share the company vision with them and invite them to be a part of it, thereby fostering an atmosphere of togetherness and tenacity in development.

Q: What’s your take on remote work?

Lee: 60% of our software development team are remote workers. We have remained flexible with our talent team, adapting to the ever-changing working environment. When you look at the evolution of the workplace, you realize that there are no one-size-fits-all templates anymore. And with portals like Slack, Skype, and Jira at our disposal, the workplace is no longer confined to the four walls of one office.

Q: What piece of advice would you give to a company owner who wants to work with the best software engineers, but finds it difficult to compete with large companies for tech talent?

Lee: You have to go above and beyond, especially if you have little funding. Be highly professional and adaptable with your engineers. Share the company vision with them and invite them to be a part of it, thereby fostering an atmosphere of togetherness and tenacity in development.
