Which country has the best web developers? HackerRank, a leading website that ranks software engineers based on their programming skills, decided to find out.
After analyzing data from their more than 1.5 million members, HackerRank posted an overall ranking of countries where top web developers live, as well as breakdowns by specific competencies like algorithms, data structures, AI, and security.
As a company that builds and maintains dedicated software development teams for clients from all over the world, we were especially happy to find out that Ukraine came in 11th in the overall ranking.
The top 5 positions on HackerRank’s list of countries with the most highly-skilled web developers were taken by China, Russia, Poland, Switzerland, and Hungary.
Surprisingly, the US came in 28th on the list despite being home to a huge number of tech companies and industry luminaries like Bill Gates and Dennis Ritchie. Similarly, some of the world’s most popular outsourcing destinations like Vietnam, India, and Pakistan placed far down the list (in 23rd, 31st, and 50th place, respectively).
Let’s look closer at how countries rank when comparing different core competencies. China may be first in overall skill, but it’s a different story when the individual criteria by which the total score is calculated are considered. When the rankings are disaggregated by skill, Ukraine tops the list of countries with the best cyber-security knowledge and is also one of the top 5 countries when it comes to mathematics and distributed systems.
While we’re on the topic of Ukraine’s role in the world of web development, it’s probably a good idea for us to remind you that Ukraine has the largest pool of tech talent in Europe, and the fourth largest supply of IT professionals in the world.
Ukraine's vibrant tech scene has also fueled growth among local startups. DepositPhotos, Jooble, CleanMyMac, PetCube, Grammarly, Readdle, and Looksery (acquired by Snapchat in 2015) are only a few of the big names that came to life in Ukraine. What's more, Mobalytics, a Ukrainian startup that provides personal performance analytics for gamers, recently became the winner of Startup Battlefield at TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2016.
The country also boasts more science and engineering graduates annually than Sweden, Belgium, Norway, Japan, and the Netherlands, according to a report by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation.
